Star Wars fans used to scour Death Valley to discover where shots from A New Hope were recorded taking into account noise of different fans and uncommon authority Lucasfilm data. Another reason it's so elusive these recording areas is on the grounds that a couple of the scenes were taped with a matte painting behind the characters, making it harder to perceive the area. 
George Lucas understood that, because of upsetting meteorological conditions, the cast and team did not have enough shots of Tatooine after they had left Tunisia. They chose to do what are called "pick-ups", where the remaining shots are taped in an altogether diverse area however mixed consistently to make the desert planet Luke calls home. These pick-ups were not recorded until spring of 1977, and the discharge date for Star Wars was May 25th of that year, so they were taking a shot at a tight timetable.
